Weekend and beyond!
Friday night Dave and Jaine came over and we all ate curry.
This is actually a bit of an understatement, "we nearly drowned in curry" possibly being a bit closer to the mark. Sat with that wonderful, slightly guilty overfull feeling amongst the ruins of a very fine dinner and spoke ye crap. Ahhh.
Saturday was a bit more rushed than I was really ready for - with the continuation of my insomnia (growl) I wound up having to sleep till about 12 to get something approaching a decent night's sleep in readiness for the weekend ahead. Jaine had gone to Uncon to listen to barking mad people talking about aliens, so dave, TL and I had a nice lunch at a not very greasy at all spoon and then began the long, long trek to Ilford.
Someone needs to move Ilford, Tooting and Totteridge & whetstone closer together. Perhaps if we cut out that inconvienient Central London bit? I don't think anyone's using it.
We set out about 3 and made it to Ilford by about half five (it would have been quicker but the Woolwich ferry was very busy - the North ircular has two and in some cases three lanes, the South Circular has a boat), there to meet with the lovely
jfs and
feistyredhead. A minimum of faffing later we headed off to the new Whirly venue.
And lo! our faith was sorely tested, for it was a bloody long walk from Liverpool Street unto the venue, actually about half an hour. There were murmurings of dissent in the ranks, and discussion of whether we should go to Bingo instead. The stalwart of heart were well rewarded, however, by the new venue.
291 gallery is an old church, the restoration of which has been a labour of love for a married couple for about 10 years. It's _beautiful_. The walls are all white plaster, providing a perfect backdrop for the light show (still second to none). Parachutes hung across the space meant that it didn't feel too high and echoing, but there was plenty of air movement and the smoke all went way up, so we weren't all stifled as in the old venue. The chill out room was actually chilled and the toilets were functional without enough space for people to stay in them the whole time. And the bar was unexpectedly gorgeous, and rather nice to have an area where the kids couldn't go - it had a very chilled out, adult sort of atmospehere to it.
I really, really hope that this venue works out for them as it's by far the nicest club venue I've ever seen. And now I know that a number 26 bus can be caught from outsaide Liverpool Street station and will take you virtually to the door, hopefully it won't be such an epic trek.
The night itself was magic, many of the Tribe in evidence and thanks to
jfs for getting us there despite the occasional dissention in the ranks.
We then headed back chez
jfs and
feistyredhead for chilling out and crumpets, and bed at a reasonable hour. Ahhh.
Unfortunately we couldn't hang around long in Ilford come the morning as we had to make it to Totteridge to pick up DT and then to Watford to pretend to be fairies as part of the UK Camirilla Changeling game. And it was fun, with some really nice players and one or two twits. I don't understand the point of going to a agme (and paying a not inconsiderable amount for it) in order to sit in a corner and be rude to anyone trying to interact with you. But there we go. For the most part everyone was lovely and forgiving of me not knowing the system that well.
And Sunday night we crawled home, tried to wash the glitter off, and guess what? I didn't sleep again.
This is getting beyond a joke...
