Protip - if you have to preface your remarks with "I'm not a racist, but...", you relly need to stop talking around the "I"...

I see your point, and for the vast majority of occasions I have ever heard this said, I would agree with you.

Do you therefore think that people should simply self-censor if they wish to make a point that they fear others might construe as racist? I suppose I'm thinking partly of the tendency of the Israeli state to equate anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. Someone saying "I'm not a racist, but what the Israelis are doing in the Gaza Strip is just wrong." seems fair play to me. Of course another adage of which I am rather fond is "All generalisations are false, including this one.", which probably colours my viewpoint.

No, I mean that if you're genuinely not a racist, you should be prepared to defend your viewpoint through its inherent justice and logic, rather than having to preface it with a disclaimer. See also "Some of my best friends are gay".

I'd suggest that there's nothing inherently wrong with the statement "What the Israelis are doing in the Gaza Strip is just wrong". It doesn't need a disclaimer, does it?

It's the same principle as people who prefix anything they say with "I don't mean to be rude..." Then don't be.
